Youth and adults experience the therapeutic and healing powers of working with horses at The Carriage Barn Equestrian Center in Newton, NH. The Carriage Barn Equestrian Center is a member of the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA) and conducts eight-week sessions in January, April, June and September. The purpose of our Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy program is to enhance participants' coping skills and help with psychological and emotional healing through equine activities. Owners of the Carriage Barn Center, who are lifelong equestrians, believe in giving back to the community by providing this program for those in need of healing. According to Sue Beliveau, mental health therapist and therapeutic riding instructor, "Some people are more comfortable in this environment than a traditional office setting. They respond well to this experiential, hands-on therapy. Adolescents especially seem to enjoy a casual atmosphere and contact with the horses. Horses provide opportunities for a unique relationship that brings new insights and personal empowerment." Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy can help in depression, low self esteem, learning disorders, and post traumatic stress disorder. Students who participate in the Therapeutic Riding Program can benefit physically with improved flexibility, balance, muscle strength, coordination, posture, and increased range of motion. Cognitive benefits include improved memory, sequencing, attention span, and self awareness. We invite those interested to visit our facility and meet our staff. Please call Sheila Bergeron, MSW, Program Coordinator, for program information, volunteering or to schedule a tour of our facilities. The Carriage Barn Equestrian Center, Newton, NH 603-378-0140. |
